A commercial driver's license (CDL) is required to operate any type of vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 lb (11,793 kg) or more for commercial use, or to transport quantities of hazardous materials that require warning placards under DOT regulations, or to operate a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver. The federal government established minimum requirements that must be met when issuing a CDL and a certification of compliance when applying for a job that requires a CDL.
