JOB DESCRIPTION

The University of Indianapolis is accepting applications for a Director of Early Literacy. The Director of Early Literacy leads and supports a range of statewide initiatives promoting the implementation of innovative and effective literacy programming, following current science of reading research and practices informed by learning sciences.  

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a complex and multifaceted professional development program and change management project with numerous schools, higher education partners, and State government
  • Provide oversight to numerous subcontractors and offer leadership to project management staff
  • Engage in research and critical review of Science of Reading, learning sciences and neuroscience studies - periodically providing detailed written and oral communications and/or presentations
  • Engage in research and critical review of Science of Reading, learning sciences and neuroscience studies - periodically providing detailed written and oral communications and/or presentations
  • Remain abreast of policy changes and curricular innovations related to early literacy
  • Collaborate with Dyslexia and Special Education professionals to initiate programmatic adaptations for teacher development workshops, conferences, and training sessions
  • Effectively communicate with CELL leadership staff and forecast programmatic barriers to success
QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Graduate degree in Education, Neurosciences, Cognitive Sciences, or related fields
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a classroom teacher is required
  • Experience as a teacher preparation instructor and/or experience as a literacy coach is preferred
  • Experience as a school administrator is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience as a school administrator is preferred, but not required
  • State teaching license required, reading specialist preferred but not required
  • A deep, practical understanding of phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension instructional and assessment practices
  • Experience and training as a primary level teacher with successful, firsthand experiences leading early-literacy instruction
  • Experience examining and reviewing research-based principles associated with literacy development. Effective project management skills and experiences
  • Prior experience leading or organizing professional development for educators
  • A working understanding of typical public-school policies, rules and norms
  • An understanding and agreement with the science of reading as defined as the preponderance of evidence to inform educators how proficient reading and writing abilities are developed
  • Experience assessing how to effectively improve student outcomes through interventions for reading difficulties
